Pets Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

This month we are going to focus our cameras on pets. Whether you have a pet or know someone who does, photographing our animals can be challenging. Animals do not respond as well to our commands so my challenge to you is to try and capture some portraits of your favorite pet this month to share in the Facebook Group. I also include some tips to help you capture better photos of your pets. Tips for taking better Pet Photos: Use Longer Lenses: Pets move fast so a longer lens, even a zoom lens, will be more flexible. A zoom lens will allow you to get in tight and widen up the shot as needed when the pet runs toward you. Prime lenses are nice but your only zoom ends up being your legs as you run around trying to compose a good shot of your pet. Zoom lenses make it easier to compose shots of fast-moving subjects. Continuous Autofocus: I said it once and I’ll say it again, Pets Move Fast! The autofocus on modern digital cameras is fantastic. Let the camera keep up with your pet rather than your shutter prefocus. By allowing your camera to keep continuous focus on your pet, you will always be ready for the shot, even if your pet moves from where you told him/her to stay. Shoot in burst mode: If your pet is like mine, he never stays still. Shooting a burst of photos at a time will increase your chances of getting that perfect expression on …

Desaturated Colors Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad Hill1 Comment

This months photo challenge will focus on editing. The topic is the saturated colors. In the challenge video I give a couple of examples and explain how I edited my photos. I decided not to show my editing process so I could save that for another video and so that the challenge could start out fresh. The challenge will last a month which will give us all the opportunity to get out a couple of times with our cameras and have time to process our images. Once you have a photo edited, head over to the Facebook group and share it in the desaturated colors album. Join us in the Facebook group: https://facebook.com/groups/ditchauto

Week #25 – Photo Challenge Reflection

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

This week will be the final week of the “Weekly Photo Challenge.” Originally I wanted this to be a year long challenge but I have came to realize that producing a weekly video as I have been is not really teaching much. My plan was to instruct and challenge. The videos lately have been nothing more than a challenge to go out and take photos and that does not really require a video. So what’s next? Rather than producing weekly challenge topic videos I will focus my attention on producing videos that instruct and there will be a challenge component at the end. So this week being the last week of our weekly photo challenge I wanted to reflect on what we have done so far. Look through all of the photos you have taken as part of this challenge and share your favorite with the group. Come back and share your photo in the Ditch Auto Facebook Group. Have fun!! Week #22 – Sports Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Early on in my photography career I turned to sports to teach me how to be fast on my feet. As a wedding photographer I knew that I needed to be able to react to my environment quickly to assure I never missed the shot. Over the years I have been able to photograph several sports I enjoy being a fan of. Part of truly Ditching Auto is understanding your camera settings to the point they become second nature. When you grab your camera you already have an idea of where your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO need to be. It is easy to find something you like to photograph and never venture from it. Trying your hand at different photography genres will help you grow as a photographer when you are capturing the things that are near and dear to your heart. Find a sport happening near you this week and try to photograph it. If nothing is going on near you, grab an athletic friend and photograph them practicing. Come back and share your photo in the Ditch Auto Facebook Group. Have fun!! Week #21 – Food Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Food is near and dear to our hearts. Food is a huge part of just about every culture. Food is an important part of our lives. As a Photographer, I have had opportunities to take photos of food professionally, but I also enjoy capturing meals that I want to remember. This week’s photography challenge is to capture food in your own unique way. When you are considering your camera settings, keep in mind that you want enough depth of field to have an appropriate amount of your subject in focus. This means settings your aperture according to the amount of your food subject that you want sharp. Come back and share your photo in the Ditch Auto Facebook Group. Have fun!! Week #19 – Still Life Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Still Life Photography has always been an interest of mine because I get to use photography to capture the objects around me. We use Still Life Photography often on social media to showcase things in our life such as food. It is the photographing of objects arranged in a way that is appealing to the eye. Still Life as an artistic style is often used to teach lighting and depth. This week, you can photograph Still Life as you see fit. Arrange some fruit on a table in your kitchen, or take some of your kids toys outside and create a scene. Week #18 – Portrait Photography – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Most of my photography career has been in the portrait space. As a wedding photographer, you have to be a good portrait photographer. I have since expanded in many directions with my photography, but I have found that being able to capture a good portrait of a person is a different challenge that most other types of photography. This week I am challenging you to capture a portrait of someone. Even if you absolutely dread having to photograph a person, I want you to stretch yourself this week and attempt to capture a portrait of a person that shows their strength or personality. I gave examples of portraits of a single person, or a couple. Save photographing groups for another challenge. Just focus on one or two people at the most. Come back and share your photo in the Ditch Auto Facebook Group. Have fun!!
