Week #5 – Negative Space – Photography Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

We are now over a month into the 2017 Ditch Auto Weekly Photography Challenge. A few of you have told me that you have used your camera more so far this year than you have in the years you have owned your camera. That is awesome to hear. The purpose of the challenge is to get out and use your camera more. This week’s challenge is Negative Space. Negative Space in the context of photography composition is using the space surrounding your point-of-interest to draw the eye of the viewer. It is often that we fill the frame with our subject matter to bring them close and allow us to see the details. This week I want you to use the space around your subject to draw your viewer in. This means pulling back from your subject or even placing your subject strategically to include them in the negative space around them. In this challenge you can use anything as your point-of-interest and your negative space can be anything that can surround your subject. Please challenge yourself to take new photos this week. I am sure you have some fantastic photos that fit the challenge but the goal of this challenge is to get out and take new photos. Feel …

Week #4 – Capturing Motion – Photography Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Continuing on in our weekly photography challenge, the goal this week is to capture motion. As I mention in the video, capturing motion can help convey meaning and emotion in your photo. You can freeze action or show movement. This week’s challenge is a technical challenge because I want you to use your camera settings to assist in capturing motion. There are a couple of different ways to capture motion. You can freeze the action with a fast shutter speed. This often freezes everything in the frame including the background. You can also attempt to freeze just the subject by using a slightly slower shutter speed while you attempt to follow the subject as it moves capturing it’s motion while the background remains blurry. Upload your Week #4 challenge photos to the new Album in the Ditch Auto Group: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.1413526168671247&type=1 Here are a few photos containing motion that I have captured in the past. I will be out this week attempting to capture a new motion shot as well. I look forward to seeing what everybody comes up with. Please challenge yourself to take new photos this week. I am sure you have some fantastic photos that fit the challenge but the goal of this challenge is to get out and take new photos. Feel free to take all week to work on this challenge. There is no hurry. The reason I am launching new challenges on Monday is so that you have all week to think about the challenge and how you want to execute …

Week #3 – Water Drops – Photography Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

Week 3 is here with a new challenge. We are in the technical category this week and will be photographing water drops. Water Drop Photography can be quite the challenge because they are often small and refract light in different ways. There are a lot of different methods for capturing water, but for this challenge we want to focus on the water drop. We may look at water splash photography another time. With water drop photography you can approach it from many different perspectives. You can look at standing water that has fallen naturally, you can create your own drops of water on a subject of your own, or you can try to capture them in motion. Each method is a challenge of it’s own. Feel free to get creative and try different things. Upload your Week #3 challenge photos to the new Album in the Ditch Auto Group: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.1406602299363634&type=1 Focus on the gear you own and use it to it’s max. Week #2 – The Color Gray – Photography Challenge

In Photography by Jerad HillLeave a Comment

We are kicking off the second week of the Ditch Auto Weekly Photography Challenge in the artistic category. This week I want you to get out there with your camera and artistically capture the color gray. Last week’s challenge was a huge success. So many of you got out there and took photos using the rule of thirds as your guide. The challenge post had over 245 comments by the end of the first week. Amazing! Some commented that the challenge was easy. Many of these challenges are not going to be that hard in concept, but when you get out there and have to create something using the rule for the challenge, that is where it gets hard. The Rule of Thirds is not a hard concept, but creating an interesting image using it is more challenging than just pointing your camera at something and lining up the lines. Check out this week’s challenge video: Please challenge yourself to take new photos this week. I am sure you have some fantastic photos that fit the challenge but the goal of this challenge is to get out and take new photos. Feel free to take all week to work on this challenge. There is no hurry. The reason I am launching new challenges on Monday is so that you have all week to think about the challenge and how you want to execute it in the form of a photo. If you have not already, please watch the Ditch Auto Weekly Photo Challenge kick-off video and …

Week #1 – Rule of Thirds – Photo Challenge

In Photography by Jerad Hill1 Comment

To kick off the Ditch Auto Weekly Photo Challenge we will be in the category of Composition. I would argue that the most challenging aspect of photography is to train your eye to see the potential of a scene to become a great photo. Some great photos happen by accident, but most great photos happened because someone’s eye saw something that everybody else didn’t. This week we will be focusing on The Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds is a composition tool to help you place your point of interest in your photo. Most cameras come with an option to turn on the rule of thirds to help with your composition. It is totally acceptable to turn this on to help you with this challenge. Looking through my photos, I realized that I tend to center my subjects quite often. It’s a natural thing to do. Place it in the middle with equal space on each side. While there are perfectly acceptable situations to center crop your point of interest, using the rule of thirds can help you invoke a variety of different emotions in the viewer as they look at your photo. Check out this week’s challenge video: Feel free to take all week to work on this challenge. There is no hurry. The reason I am launching new challenges on Monday is so that you have all week to think about the challenge and how you want to execute it in the form of a photo.
